Window
Series
2011-2023
The < Window > series combines physical window frames collected from demolition sites with paintings of scenes outside the window based on the study of the rapid development of middle-class population in China's large cities. By integrating two scenes that cannot appear simultaneously in reality, the work aims to express the differences in economy and status, with an emphasis on the real facts and contradictions. His recent work has focused on the relationship among space, landscape and people in the process of urban renewal. The urban landscape has been renewed by the flow of capital and wealth, the redistricting of space and property rights, as well as the abandoned and removed, the newly built and the preserved buildings which are reassigned with brand-new values. The work shows the ways in which urban renewal is guided by wealth and power between different classes, as well as the ways in which this process is reproduced on various networks and in advertisements. The work also responds to, and continues to explore, the close connection between property and art, advertising and art, as articulated by John Berger. The old window frames suggest a vanished space whose sovereignty has been taken away. The use and viewing of architectural and urban space is an exercise of power, while the painting of virtual landscape is actually an expression of the desire to acquire the access have a view over the outside world.
